Family therapy is such an important, and oft overlooked, form of counseling. This type of counseling focuses on treating the family as a unit- including everyone in treatment since everyone does life together. It makes more sense to have everyone in on what is going on so everyone can participate in the new, positive skills and habits developed in counseling sessions.
Balance in Treatment
As a practice, we have been specifically trained to work alongside families, considering multiple sources of conflict contributing to the issue at hand, and keeping in mind each person’s perspective and value as we work with you all. We present opportunities for each person to express their perspectives to all parties, balancing personality strength with fairness within the relationships present. It is through respect, openness, and a willingness to listen that families are able to see a more permanent change.
Building together
We have likened doing family therapy to a team building a house. If one person shows up, has their own set of tools and their own blueprint, the house can still go up, albeit slowly. However, if you get a whole team of people working on that house, each with their own blueprint and their own set of tools, the house will be built much more quickly. It is the same way with family therapy. We want as much of the family unit present and willing to help as possible so change can be affected that much more quickly.
